Sheeba Mathew shares her love of art with neighbors at The Grove Frisco
“Art is an outlet for energy and creativity we don’t use in our jobs and other daily activities,” says Sheeba Mathew, a homeowner in The Grove Frisco who has turned her love of painting into a thriving business teaching art to kids and adults. And neighbors.
Sheeba recently taught a watercolor class to a group of eager neighbors at Orchard House, an activity she would love to continue as she grows her business.
A self-taught artist, Sheeba started exploring watercolors, acrylics and oils during the Covid years, and soon turned her passion for art into her main pursuit.
In addition to teaching, Sheeba creates her own paintings, which she sells and shows on her website, and with groups including the Visual Arts Guild of Frisco.
Before becoming immersed in art, Sheeba worked in finance. She also has a teaching background, having worked in special education in New Jersey, before she moved to Texas.
Being resourceful and open to change comes naturally to Sheeba, who grew up with her family in the African country of Malawi.
“We couldn’t just run to the store to get what we needed, so we learned to be resourceful, to grow or create what we needed,” she says. “You learn how to pick up a lot of skills and to get creative.”
Sheeba loves to teach kids as well as adults.
For kids, she uses her background in education to create a detailed curriculum for each class, so parents can rest assured their kids are getting structured learning and instruction.
With adults, she takes a freer approach, helping them rediscover artistic abilities that might seem long lost.
“I’ve noticed that a lot of adults used to love art, but they stopped creating because perhaps someone criticized their work, or they thought they should be spending their time doing other things,” she says. “I encourage them to reconnect with their inner creativity.”
Sheeba’s classes include step-by-step instruction along with one-on-one encouragement, and suggestions tailored to each student’s personal talents.
“It’s wonderful to see adult students open up, especially after a glass of wine in class,” she says. “My husband, Manoj, works in IT and cooking is his outlet. For myself and so many others, making art is our outlet.”
Sheeba and Manoj are the proud parents of two children, Zach and Zerah.
